Concord baseball shuts out Cardinals

The Concord University baseball team posted two shutout victories on Sunday, extending its winning streak to seven games by beating conference foe Wheeling Jesuit University 9-0 and 7-0.

Over the four-game weekend, Concord (25-11, 22-8 Mountain East) outscored the Cardinals 27-1.

Chris Kelly (6-2) tossed a two-hit complete game for the Mountain Lions in the opener and Zach Kelly (5-1) won the second game, combining with reliever Tim Leather for a four-hit shutout.

Jerrod Groves and Joe Camp each went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader. Groves scored four runs and registered an RBI from his leadoff spot in the Concord batting order. Camp doubled and tripled, driving in four runs.

Chris Kelly retired 14 batters he faced in one stretch, and he matched a career-high with six strikeouts. The Grundy, Va. native has won his last three starts.

Bret Blevins and freshman Eli Flynn each added a stolen base on the base paths. Blevins now has 19 stolen bases this year.

Zach Kelly surrendered just one hit after the second inning before giving way to Leather for the game’s final two innings. He struck out four batters. Leather fanned three of the seven he faced.

In a game that saw all nine starters achieve hits, the Maroon and Gray tallied 12 hits. The quintet of Camp, Brad Sullivan, Joey Miller, Ryan Johnston and Charles Goss all posted doubles as well.
