Concord swept by Seton Hill

Mountain Lions drop opener 11-2, then 3-2 in finale

ATHENS — The Concord Mountain Lions and Seton Hill Griffins, the clubs picked to finish first in their respective halves of the West Virginia Conference this season, faced off to begin league play on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The visitors from Pennsylvania took a doubleheader sweep with 11-2 and 3-2 wins, giving coach Marc Marrizaldi his 300th coaching win in the process.

Pat McCarthy and Nick Sell drove in two runs each in Seton Hill’s six-run second inning in game one. Sell and Brendan Costantino added solo home runs in the third inning for an 11-0 score.

Concord managed its two runs in the seventh inning. Devin Smith scored on a groundout by Jacob Mays, and Brandon Costa got home on a passed ball. Smith was 2 for 2 in the first game and Jerrod Groves hit a triple.

Drew Spear (0-3) took the loss, facing 13 batters in 1 1/3 innings and giving up seven hits and seven earned runs. Alex Haines picked up his first win of the season for Seton Hill, striking out five CU batters in four innings and scattering for hits.

Concord junior pitchers Tyler Coyle (1-2) and Tim Leather matched Seton Hill starter Brett Sullivan in the second game.

Coyle lasted 5 1-3 innings, giving up just three runs on seven hits. Leather finished out the game for Concord with two strikeouts in a perfect 1 2-3 innings of work. Leather, who has a team-low 2.70 ERA, has allowed runs in just three of his seven appearances out of the bullpen this year.

Offensively, Costa went 2-for-2, while the trio of junior first baseman Joey Miller, sophomore catcher T.J. Brockway and freshman Joe Camp all registered one hit. Smith and Brockway each drove in a run.

The Griffins struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second on Jackson Boyd’s two-run single with nobody out. However, Concord was able to limit the Griffins to just the two runs in the frame thanks to solid defense that included Johnston fielding a ground ball and firing a throw to catcher Charles Goss to tag out Boyd as he was attempting to score from third.

The Mountain Lions offense responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Miller led the frame off with a single that was followed by Johnston being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs.

After a successful sacrifice by sophomore second baseman Jerrod Groves advanced Miller and Johnston to second and third, Smith drove in Miller with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game. Brockway then tied the game with a double to left field that plated Johnston. The inning ended when Brockway was thrown out at home off of a hit from Costa.

Coyle and Sullivan dominated the next three innings. The opposing hurlers combined to allow no runs and just three hits.

Boyd broke the 2-2 tie with a home run in the top of the sixth that gave Seton Hill a one-run lead and knocked Coyle from the game for Leather, whose strong showing out of the bullpen kept the Concord deficit to just one run heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Mountain Lions outfielder Bret Blevins battled Sullivan in an 11-pitch at-bat, but struck out to end the game.

Sullivan (2-0) took the complete-game win for Seton Hill (6-3, 2-0), allowing the two earned runs and five hits. He also struck out three, walked one and hit five batters.

Concord (5-10, 0-2) travels to Wheeling Jesuit for a doubleheader 1 p.m. Tuesday.

    West Virginia University head baseball coach Randy Mazey was having lunch at an Oklahoma City restaurant Monday afternoon, keeping a close watch on the television set.
    With every passing minute, the tornado that devastated the Oklahoma town of Moore, was moving closer and closer to his location and its path was being documented by a local television station. At one point, the coach even looked out the window to see if he could see the approaching funnel.
