Bob Hummell was an outstanding 6-foot-3, 190-pound basketball guard at West Virginia University in 1968-69-70.
The Moundsville native played two years for Bucky Waters and one for Sonny Moran. He’s now residing with wife Charlotte in Goldsboro, Ga.
Asked whether he enjoyed his years at WVU, Hummell replied, “Absolutely! Yeah, I’m a West Virginia boy and I’m a West Virginian at heart.
“When I was in Moundsville High School, I made it out pretty well. I could have gone to a lot of different places, but for some reason I just decided on West Virginia.
“But I don’t regret having made that decision. I wish I could have scored a few more points or won a few more games. But that just wasn’t in the cards.”
Hummell said people in West Virginia are “very, very special” and he appreciated their support during his four years at WVU. Hummell played a year on the freshman team, as required during that period by the NCAA.
For his three varsity seasons, Hummell played in a total of 79 games and logged an average of 31.3 minutes per contest.
He made 420 field goals in 1,017 attempts and 290 of 310 free throws, for 1,117 points. His scoring average per game was 14.1.
Hummell also had 345 rebounds and 220 assists.
His career highs included 32 points against Syracuse in a 94-84 win on Feb. 14, 1970. He had 10 field goals in that shootout. Thirteen free throws was his career high in 15 tries against East Carolina on Nov. 30, 1968.
“My life has been very good,” he said. “I’ve been very blessed in so many ways.”
After graduating in May 1970, Hummell was a teacher and basketball coach at Martinsburg High School for five years. He made a lot of friends in the Eastern Panhandle, where his wife had grown up.
Then Hummell started a “very, very rewarding and satisfying” 32-year career with a world-wide company in by-products and chemicals. He said, “I traveled for them and held a variety of positions with them.”
He noted that it was about a $12 billion firm. He has been retired since November of 2007.
Hummell now spends his free time in the Southeast “playing a little golf and doing some fishing.”
Bob and his wife, the former Charlotte Buzzard, have been married since 1970. They were Moundsville High sweethearts.
She is also a WVU alumnus.
They have two sons, Brian, 38 and David, 34. Both are college graduates. The Hummells also have four grandchildren.
