Mountaineers rout Glenville State 95-53 in exhibition game

Deniz Kilicli scored 19 points and La Salle transfer Aaric Murray added 13 as West Virginia outscored Glenville State 66-24 in the paint on its way to a 95-53 exhibition victory over Glenville State Tuesday night at the WVU Coliseum.

In front of a crowd of 5,208 anxious basketball fans, WVU overcame a poor night from 3-point range — the Mountaineers hit just 1 of 14 long-range attempts — by playing strong defense. WVU held Glenville State to 32.8 percent shooting from the field and forced 26 turnovers, scoring 32 points off those takeaways.

Volodymyr Gerun, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward from Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, who was ruled ineligible for the first six games of the regular season, came off the bench to score 12 points and grab three rebounds. The star of the backcourt was Juwan Staten, who ended the game with 16 points and a team-high six assists.

Glenville State was led by Lamont Cole, who scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.

The Pioneers never led in the game, which WVU controlled 48-22 at the half.

The game served as a reunion of sorts for a number of former Mountaineer players. Both Joe Mazzulla and Rob Summers are assistant coaches on Stephen Dye’s Glenville State staff, while Da’Sean Butler is a graduate assistant for the Mountaineers this season.

WVU will open the 2012-13 season at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 12, playing at Gonzaga on ESPN. It will be a rematch of the NCAA Tournament game that ended WVU’s season last March.
