Marshall to host No. 22 Memphis tonight

For the first time in three seasons, a ranked opponent will play at the Cam Henderson Center tonight.

Marshall will host No. 22 Memphis at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen calling the action.

Both teams are coming off home wins as the Tigers (23-3, 10-0 Conference USA) recorded their 15th straight victory on Wednesday — second in the NCAA only to Akron’s 16 — an 83-71 win over UCF.

The Thundering Herd (11-14, 4-6 C-USA) won on Wednesday as well, beating Rice 71-70.

The last time a ranked team played in Huntington was March 2, 2010. The Herd lost to No. 21 UTEP, 80-76.

The Tigers, with all of their success over the years, have not been ranked while playing at the Cam Henderson center since 2008, when they were No. 2 in the country.

Marshall nearly defeated Memphis in their last meeting, falling 73-72 on Jan. 26 at the FedEx Forum.

Elijah Pittman leads the Herd in scoring with 15.4 points per game, which is eighth in C-USA. In Marshall’s 10 conference games, Pittman has been even better, averaging 16.8 points, second only to East Carolina’s Maurice Kemp (18.7).

DeAndre Kane (14.3) ranks 11th in the conference and D.D. Scarver (13.2) 17th. Scarer is also third in 3-pointers made with 2.3.

Kane’s career point total of 1,374 is just three points away from tying Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer Hal Greer for 19th on the school’s all-time list.

Kane, a junior guard, has played really well against Memphis over the years, averaging 17.5 points in six career games against the Tigers.

Memphis, which has dominated the all-time series 12-2, is led by junior guard Joe Jackson, who averages a team-high 13.9 points per game. His 49.1 3-point percentage is ninth in the NCAA.

Geron Johnson, the reigning C-USA Player of the Week, is second on the team in scoring with 11.1 ppg.

Due to the television broadcast, the game cannot be shown on Herd All-Access. It can be heard on the radio throughout the Thundering Herd IMG Sports Network or a paid subscription to Herd All-Access.
