MORGANTOWN — Sam Huff will be honored at West Virginia University’s football game against James Madison.

That will be played on Saturday, Sept. 15, at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. The kickoff time is 4:30 p.m.

It is a nonconference contest sponsored by Russ Potts Productions, Inc.

“This game has been designed as Sam Huff Day,” said Potts, the proprietor. He’s a former Virginia legislator who has been a friend of Sam Huff for a long time.

“We will honor Sam Huff in pregame and at halftime,” Potts said.

In addition, the legendary Farmington native, one of the greatest gridders in West Virginia University history, will be serving as honorary captain of the 2012 Mountaineers at this game.

Potts said Gary Clark, like Huff, a former Redskins player, will be honorary captain of James Madison University Dukes.

This will be West Virginia’s first-ever appearance for a football game at FedEx Field. WVU stands to earn $2 million as its share of the proceeds.

“It’s an easy interstate drive all the way to FedEx Field,” Potts noted. “A huge contingent of WVU alumni lives in the Washington/Baltimore corridor/northern Virginia/West Virginia Panhandle.”

He believes this will be a really good, interesting matchup between the Mountaineers and Dukes.

“Keep in mind that JMU, two years ago, upset nationally ranked Virginia Tech, 21-16, in Blacksburg, Va.,” Potts recalled. “That was only the second win by a FCS team over a ranked FBS and (I think) the Dukes certainly are capable of doing the same to West Virginia.”

James Madison posted an 8-5 record last season as a member of the Colonial Conference. It won an opening round FCS playoff game over Eastern Kentucky before falling in the round of 16 to eventual national champion North Dakota State.

JMU has 46 returning lettermen, including seven starters on offense, six on defense and three on special teams.

In national FCS preseason polls, the Dukes have been picked fifth by Athlon magazine, seventh by Phil Steele and 13th by Lindy’s.
