The very first pitch of the West Virginia Miners’ 2013 Prospect League championship season was delivered by Kevin Johnstone. Today, he will be back on the mound from which it began.
Johnstone, a sophomore at Case Western Reserve, will lead the Spartans against John Carroll University in a nine-inning game at 11 a.m. today at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.
It will be the season opener for both teams, and Johnstone gets the nod in his home away from home ... away from home.
A native of Valencia, Calif., Johnstone made 10 starts for the Miners last summer. He was 3-2 with a 3.19 earned run average.
Case Western is a NCAA Division III college in Cleveland.
John Carroll will also meet Allegheny (Pa.) College in a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday. That will be followed by La Roche and Waynesburg at 5 p.m.
The Mountain State then takes the stage Sunday and Monday with doubleheaders between Fairmont State and Davis & Elkins. Sunday’s games will start at 1 p.m., with Monday’s action starting at noon.
