Marshall releases 2013 football schedule

A little old and a whole lot of new.

Marshall’s 2013 football schedule, its first reflecting a new-look Conference USA, was released Tuesday by the league. Before the start of the conference portion, however, the Thundering Herd has dates with some familiar opponents.

The season will start Aug. 31 with a home game against Miami (Ohio). The teams have not met since Marshall beat the RedHawks in 2004, the Herd’s last season in the Mid-American Conference.

A week later the Herd will again be at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Sept. 7 against Gardner-Webb.

The next two weeks find Marshall on the road against teams with which it shares a history.

On Sept. 14, the Herd will continue its Battle For the Bell series with Ohio. Marshall will get one more crack at quarterback Tyler Tettleton, who has led the Bobcats to back-to-back wins in the rivalry.

On Sept. 21, Marshall will make a fourth trip to Blacksburg, Va., since 2002 to take on Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

After the first of two open dates, the Herd will begin a string of three straight games against C-USA newcomers. The first will be Oct. 5 at home against UT-San Antonio. That will be followed by games at Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee.

Following the second open week, the Herd will be at home for games against league veterans Southern Miss (Nov. 2) and UAB (Nov. 9), followed by consecutive road trips to defending league champion Tulsa (Nov. 16) and newcomer Florida International (Nov. 23), which Marshall defeated 20-10 in the 2011 Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl.

The season will end Nov. 30 at home against East Carolina, which will be playing its final season as a member of C-USA.

“I’m certainly happy to be renewing the series with a longtime rival in Miami (Ohio),” said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. “This schedule gives our fans many drivable options and it will be great to finish the regular season, once again, with East Carolina.”

All games are scheduled for Saturdays, but that could change depending on TV schedules that have yet to be determined.

Game times will be announced at a later date.
