Report: WVU, IMG reach deal

BECKLEY — According to a report in Sports Business Daily, IMG College has won West Virginia University’s third-tier multimedia rights. WVU had been one of the few remaining schools managing its rights in-house.

The Sports Business Daily report did not release terms of the deal, but it indicated that a formal announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

IMG College, which owns the rights to more than 80 universities across the country, won the bid, the report said, over nine contenders, including Learfield Sports, Nelligan Sports, CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, Fox Sports Net, Front Row Marketing, Legends Sales and Marketing, XOS Digital and West Virginia Radio Corporation. The contract is expected to begin July 1.

With the new deal, IMG, which already has partnerships with Texas, Kansas, Baylor and TCU within the Big 12, is expected to receive the television rights to one football game per season and a handful of men’s basketball games, complete radio broadcast rights, coaches shows for television, radio and the web, television rights to all other WVU sports other than football and men’s basketball, rights to sell signage and sponsorships and the rights to produce online content.

The future for on-air talent such as WVU play-by-play voice Tony Caridi in uncertain, although IMG has held onto longtime talent when taking over at other colleges in the past.
