Herd returns home to take on Panthers

— Five days after suffering its second-worst defeat of the season, Marshall returns home tonight looking for some sort of spark.

The Thundering Herd (7-14, 1-5 Conference USA) will host FIU (11-9, 3-2) at 7 p.m. The Panthers are in the middle of the pack in their first year in C-USA.

Marshall will be looking to erase the aftertaste of a 98-77 loss at Louisiana Tech last Saturday. Marshall shot 51 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Bulldogs, but turned the ball over 22 times leading to 29 points for Louisiana Tech.

Five of those turnovers came in the game’s first two minutes as the Bulldogs established their dominance early.

“We knew what was coming and didn’t do a good job,” Marshall head coach Tom Herrion told the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington. “So weak with the ball. Careless turnovers spotted them a big early lead.”

Probable starters for the Herd will be guards Kareem Canty (16.7 points, 6.4 assists), Chris Thomas (11.2 ppg, 4.0 rebounds) and DeVince Boykins (3.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg), and forwards TyQuane Goard (7.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Ryan Taylor (13.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg).

Taylor was named the league’s Freshman of the Week after averaging 17.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg against Rice and Louisiana Tech.

FIU has four players averaging double-digit scoring. Leading the Panthers is forward Tymell Murphy at 16.4 points and 8.0 rebounds. Forward Rakeem Buckles averages 13.3 ppg and 9.1 boards, guard Raymond Taylor 12.2 ppg and 6.2 assists and guard Dennis Mavin 11.1 ppg.
