OAK HILL —
Merry Hanning, president of the Oak Hill High/Collins High Alumni Association, and her crew have been planning a celebratory banquet for the state champion Oak Hill Red Devils for over a month now. It wasn’t until Friday morning, though, that Hanning got the news for which she’d been hoping.
“I got a call about an hour ago,” she said Friday morning, “confirming that coach Bob Huggins has agreed to be our guest speaker.”
Hanning was more than excited.
“This is what I wanted all along,” she said. “He was my first choice.”
Huggins was a little busy last month, however, taking his West Virginia Mountaineers to the Final Four in the NCAA basketball tournament, so he hadn’t gotten back with Hanning.
Following the NCAA tournament and some time spent on recruiting, Huggins was able to confirm that he will be the guest speaker at Thursday night’s banquet honoring the Red Devils.
“I wanted something really, really special for the boys, and I think this puts us over the top,” Hanning said.
At the time of the announcement of the banquet, Hanning said, “This will be a time for everyone to come together to let this group of young people know just how proud the community is of their accomplishments.”
The banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Lewis Community Foundation’s Christian Community Center in Oak Hill.
Tickets are $25 and are available from members of the Alumni Association. Proceeds from the event will go toward a scholarship to be awarded by the Alumni Association in honor of the 2010 Red Devil basketball team.
