— The relationship between Marshall baseball and the city of Beckley will continue in October.

The final leg of Marshall’s 2013 Summer Baseball Series will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at Linda K. Epling Stadium. A start time has not yet been determined.

The series made four stops during the actual summer months before the finale in 12 days.

The showcase is open to pitchers and position players ages 14 to 18. Participants will be able to work out not only in front of Marshall coach Jeff Waggoner and his coaching staff, but also coaches from other colleges invited to attend.

A game will follow a pro-style workout.

“This showcase will be very unique in the way we evaluate players,” said Tim Epling, manager of the West Virginia Miners and son of stadium owners Kay and Doug Epling. “Players will go through a series of timed athletic movements associated with baseball. These skill sets will give the coaches and professional scouts a better way of knowing a player’s ability.

“At the end of the day, players will have a better idea of what will be required to reach whatever goals they may want to achieve.”

The cost for the showcase is $100 per entry. Please make checks payable to Marshall University Athletics. To sign up, complete the registration form found at www.HerdZone.com, or register at the field the day of the clinic.

The showcase in Beckley will be just one of several events for Marshall baseball over the coming weeks. The program will have a presence during Homecoming weekend, in conjunction with the football team’s game against UTSA at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Alumni weekend kicks off Friday with the 19th annual Marshall Baseball Golf Tournament. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start following at noon. The tournament is sponsored by the Marshall University Dugout Club.

There will then be a baseball intrasquad scrimmage at 5 p.m. at Hurricane High School.

On Saturday, the second annual Johnny “Sarge” Piepenbrink Homecoming Tailgate will begin at noon in the parking lot of City National Bank across from Edwards Stadium. The 1978 baseball team will be honored during the football game. That team won the Southern Conference championship and was one win away from going to the College World Series.

Also on tap for Marshall baseball is its Scout Day on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Hurricane High. As part of the day, the Herd will play Potomac State at 3 p.m. in its first game against another team in the fall season under Waggoner.

The teams will play two nine-inning games. Pro scouts will be on hand.

The annual Green and White World Series will run in two parts. The first will be Oct. 17-20, with the second set for Oct. 24-27. Parents Day will be Saturday, Oct. 26.
