Marshall claims CIT victory

Herd opens tourney with win over Western Carolina

HUNTINGTON — It was a nail-biter, but Marshall pulled it out.

Marshall claimed a 90-88 victory over Western Carolina in a Tournament first-round contest Tuesday at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd improves to 24-9.

Damier Pitts hit two free throws with one second showing on the clock to give the Herd the win.

It was the first postseason men’s basketball game for Marshall since an 81-80 loss in the NIT to Virginia Commonwealth in 1988.

Western Carolina ends its season at 22-12.

Marshall led by 11 points with 2:39 left in the game. But a Catamounts rally that included two 3s in the final 39 seconds — culminated by a trey from Brandon Giles with six ticks left to tie it at 88-88, got Western Carolina back in it.

Pitts paced Marshall with 24 points. Dago Pena added 18, Darryl Merthie netted 14 and Tirrell Baines contributed 11.

Jake Robinson led the Catamounts with 21 points. Richie Gordon and Giles had 13 apiece with Mike Williams and Harouna Mutombo chipping in with 10 each.

The Tournament is a single-elimination tournament, consisting of four rounds, with the first three rounds being played at on-campus sites, which are determined by seeding. The championship game will be played at an on-campus site to be determined by seeding. The tournament is in its second year.

Marshall is the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed.
