BECKLEY — Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens broke ground Thursday for phase one of its fifth mausoleum. The project will be completed in two phases.

Since the mausoleum will be built in separate phases, sales director Scott Boyd said it is hard to determine when the entire project will be completed.

The first phase, he said, is scheduled to be completed in nine months. Construction for the last half of the building will start when the first half is sold out of spaces, he said.

“We are absolutely excited about this new addition,” Boyd said. “Right now, all four of our mausoleums are sold out, even the larger one.”

Upon completion, the mausoleum will have 504 casket spaces and 96 cremation niches. It will be located in the very back near the larger and smaller mausoleums.

Manager Venetta Broyles said discussion for the new mausoleum started back in 2005.

“We started running out of spaces, so we needed to expand,” she said. “With the others not having any space left now, this is definitely something that is needed.”

Boyd said Blue Ridge is selling spaces for the new mausoleum now. They will also be giving additional pre-construction discounts, he said.
