“When ordinary just won’t do, give us a call.”
Jonesin’ for a Good Sandwich offers the “unordinary” as well as some high-quality traditional breakfast and lunch items.
Doug Jones, owner, said he and his wife Cathy had discussed the idea of a catering business for a while but, after hearing feedback from the community, decided to pursue creating a sandwich shop.
The two have been in the Beckley area for nearly four years now, after leaving North Carolina to be closer to Cathy’s family here in West Virginia.
“People were saying they wanted something different, as far as a restaurant goes.”
Jones said he considered what Beckley already has to offer and decided a breakfast and lunch restaurant would be the best fit.
“There are a few local options, with good food, but we wanted to offer a higher quality.”
Not only does Jonesin’ promise high quality foods, but they also promise healthy alternatives to fast food.
“We eat healthy at home, and being a chef, we wanted to bring that to the public also.”
Jones compares this establishment to a New York or Miami-style deli.
He said breakfast options include your choice of meats and cheeses on a variety of bread, as well as Belgian waffles with assorted sauces.
Breakfast is served from 7 to 10:30 a.m., then the menu switches to lunch.
There are two lunch menus: classic sandwiches and the “unordinary.”
Classic sandwich items include build your own burger, grilled chicken, buffalo chicken and many other deli-style sandwiches, such as a Reuben or an Italian meats sandwich.
Jones said these meats are high quality and a bit more expensive for his restaurant, but for the customer, prices are “relatively reasonable.”
As for the “unordinary,” these are sandwiches that Jones and his family have created to give people a variety.
Unordinary sandwiches include the boneless baby back rib sandwich, deep fried catfish sandwich, Carolina pulled pork barbecue sandwich and the deep fried turkey sandwich.
Salads are also available, including a chef salad, grilled chicken salad and a pear and bleu cheese salad.
Jonesin’ for a Good Sandwich is a perfect play on words and Jones said he and his wife came up with it accidentally.
One morning Cathy was creating the catering business cards and she asked Doug, “What do you want to call it?”
Sleepy-headed Doug replied, “Can this wait a minute? I’m really jonesin’ for a cup of coffee right now.”
The light bulbs flickered above their heads and the name for their business was found.
Jones said his experience in the food service industry goes way back, from working at Bennigan’s to being a chef at the Embassy Suites to most recently serving as a kitchen manager at Lonestar.
His love of cooking, however, goes back even further than that.
“I’ve been cooking since I was old enough to see over the top of the stove. My mom raised me the way she was raised many years ago, that people need to be self-supporting above and beyond everything else. So I was taught to cook from a very early age.”
He said his kitchen skills come from his mom, but his grilling talents come from his dad.
“He would grill twice a week and he taught me all about the temperatures and how to check the meat.”
He said the barbecue sauce recipe he uses at Jonesin’ was his father’s, just tuned up a bit with a few extra spices.
His sons, Jack and Dust’n, also work at Jonesin’ for a Good Sandwich and they invite everyone to give them a call “when the ordinary won’t do.”

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
