Mt. Nebo man joins New River Gorge Regional Development Authority board

W.D. Smith of Mt. Nebo has been named to the board of directors of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority.

“Few people in southern West Virginia have the breadth of knowledge and relationships that W.D. Smith has,” said Matt Wender, president of the NRGRDA. “I have known him for many years and welcomed every opportunity I had to work with him. Needless to say, he will contribute greatly to the NRGRDA board and I look forward to my continued work with him for the betterment of our New River Gorge region.”

Smith is the business development and funding manager for E.L. Robinson Engineering's Beckley office. He came to E.L. Robinson following his retirement from Region 4 Planning and Development Council last year after 28 years of service.

For the last 12 years, he served as executive director. During his term of leadership, the five-county region of Fayette, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Pocahontas and Webster saw enormous expansion of public water and sewer service growth.

Each of the five counties also won funding for the development of an industrial/business park which continues to provide opportunities for job creation and economic growth.

NRGRDA Executive Director Chad Wykle also welcomed Smith to the board.

“W.D. Smith is the epitome of what the NRGRDA needs in a person charged with helping to guide the region's community and economic development efforts. His extensive experience with infrastructure and development will be a great asset to the organization,” Wykle said.

Smith is a 1974 graduate of West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the School of Agriculture and Forestry.
