Staggers certified, declared diplomate of the board

Dr. Margaret Staggers has fulfilled certification requirements of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and is declared a diplomate of the board. Staggers is an emergency room doctor at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital and a state ddelegate.

In the early 1960s, the population of the U.S. began demanding an improved quality of care in hospital emergency departments. In response, hospitals developed full-time emergency services dedicated to providing physicians trained in the provision of quality medical care to patients with life-or-limb threatening conditions. In response to this need, a number of physicians began limiting their practice to emergency medicine. In doing this, these physicians also developed skills which would be critical to providing quality care in this environment.

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is one of 24 medical specialty boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Founded in 1976, ABEM develops and administers the Emergency Medicine certification examination for physicians who have met the ABEM credentialing requirements. The first certification examination was administered in 1980. ABEM has certified more than 30,000 physicians since that time. Certification is for a period of 10 years.
