Beckley native brings his skills, talents back to the community

The School of Harmony is welcoming Beckley native Dr. Jacob Womack to its team.

Womack specializes in classical, jazz and group piano and he is now offering lessons at the School of Harmony.

“The main thing he will add for us is piano lab,” said Charles Lee Hicks, president and CEO of the School of Harmony.

“We’ve always been known for one-on-one lessons, but he offers group lessons also, which will provide a new line of education for the community.”

Womack received his bachelor’s degree in music education from West Virginia University, then went on to Pennsylvania State University to earn his master’s of music in piano pedagogy and performance.

Most recently, he earned his doctorate degree in piano performance from West Virginia University.

He has performed as a guest artist at Westminster College and Potomac State College and as a collaborative pianist at the Staunton Music Festival.

In June, he took third prize in the WVU “Intersection of Jazz and Classical Music Piano Festival” jazz competition and was a semi-finalist in the classical competition.

As an undergraduate, Womack received first place in the West Virginia Music Teachers National Association “Young Artist Competition” and represented the state in the Eastern regional competition at Duquesne University.

Before joining the staff at the School of Harmony, Dr. Womack was a senior piano instructor in the WVU Community Music Program.

He worked for five years as a graduate teaching assistant at WVU and Penn State, instructing applied piano, group piano and music education courses.

In 2009, he received the MTNA Star Award for demonstrating excellence as a graduate teaching assistant.

Hicks said Womack is already teaching classes at School of Harmony and he expects his classes to fill up quickly.
