NRCTC administrative assistant being honored

BECKLEY — Deena Rodgers, an administrative assistant at the Greenbrier Valley Campus of New River Community and Technical College, has been named the school’s outstanding contributor for 2012.

Rodgers was selected for the honor by a vote of New River employees. She received the award Oct. 25 at a statewide conference of all West Virginia community colleges in Canaan Valley. Each community college selects one outstanding employee to be recognized at the closing banquet at the annual conference.

The award was presented by James Skidmore, chancellor of the West Virginia Community and Technical College System, New River President Ted D. Spring and Greenbrier Valley Campus Dean Roger Griffith.

Rodgers joined New River in 2004. In presenting the honor, Griffith noted that her responsibilities have evolved and grown over the years, and she has handled each new challenge with exceptional skill.

Rodgers began her career at the college as the business officer for the campus.  Griffith noted that in that role, she brought efficiency and order to an often chaotic and extremely busy office.

“One talent that stood out above all others was her ability to deal with students from all backgrounds and leave them with a sense that they were being helped,” Griffith stated.

She then moved into admissions and registration, where her ability to deal with students was brought to the forefront. She now serves as the coordinator of off-campus programs in the prisons and dual-credit students at the GVC. She also serves in the important role of veteran certification o fficer for the college, providing an array of official services to veteran students and their dependents.

In addition to her administrative duties, Rodgers is an adjunct instructor in the Administrative Office Technology program.

“Rarely does a person match their abilities to a career as well as Deena Rodgers,” Griffith said. “You will be hard pressed to find a person with more dedication to our students. We at New River have truly been blessed by having such a talented person in our college community. New River endeavors only to hire people that are ‘stars’ at their chosen profession, and with Deena, we got it right.”
