Fluff and fold mega loads at new laundromat

BECKLEY — Beckley Self-Service Laundry is now open and ready for business.

Owner Patricia “Trish” Hargis said there are 30 washers and dryers available at the location at 2966 Robert C. Byrd Drive.

She said the washers and dryers come in three different load capacities: double loaders, giant loaders and mega loaders, which hold two, four, and six loads of clothes, respectively.

Double load washers are $2.75, giant loads are $4.75 and mega loads are $6.75.

Double load dryers are $1.50 for 30 minutes, giant loads are $1.75 for 35 minutes and mega loads are $2.50 for 40 minutes.

Hargis, who is a West Virginia Institute of Technology graduate with a degree in business, said a few winters ago, she was discussing ideas for a business with her sister-in-law.

“I have a 7-year-old son and we were waiting to see if school was going to be closed due to snow. I told her I want to start my own business because it was difficult to find child care when school is closed for snow days.”

Her husband, a Marine veteran, told her that she should solve a need for the community, so she started praying for an answer.

A few months later, Hargis said she started having problems with her dryer at home. Her husband soon found that a bird had built a nest in it, as the cap on the outside had came off.

After going to a laundromat to finish her laundry, she found that much of the equipment was out-dated.

“So, I came home and I told my husband, ‘I’m going to open a laundromat.’”

She said all the equipment is brand new at Beckley Self-Service Laundry.

The 40-pound and mega washers accept coins, credit cards, debit cards and loyalty cards.

A vending machine is also on-site with detergent, fabric sheets, stain fighters and laundry bags.

An ATM and change machine are also available.

“We have free WiFi, two large screen televisions, snack machines, plenty of parking and security cameras.”

Hargis said a drop-off service is also available.

Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

A grand opening will be held in April.
