Job fair boosts employment search

BECKLEY — Job hunting is never fun, but with help from more than 20 local companies, Tamarack and The Register-Herald, that task was little easier Wednesday.

The day marked the newspaper’s eighth semi-annual job fair hosted at Tamarack. Many who attend the six-hour event said they were pleasantly surprised.

“I lost my job a few months ago and have been having a hard time finding something else,” said Kenny Simms, a Beckley resident. “This is a great opportunity to get to meet a lot of possible employers and get their attention.”

Leslie Rinehart of Crab Orchard agreed.

“I like that you know what you’re getting at these fairs,” she said. “A lot of times, if you are applying for classifieds, you never know if the position has been filled or what. Here, the companies come because they have open opportunities.”

Joe Hall said he likes the fair because it allows him to “feel out” possible opportunities, therefore allowing him to make the best decision possible.

As Hall left, he said, “I feel really great about the people I met today. There are some jobs that I am definitely interested in and hope that I made good use of my opportunity and made a lasting impression.”

Companies representing fast-food chains were present as well as coal companies and resorts. With such a selection, the job fair made the task of finding that next job a little easier.

Diana Slone, classified advertising manager for Beckley Newspapers, said the fair gives employers a chance to find qualified employees to fill vacancies that may have been created due to students returning to college.

Exhibitors at the fair were Global Contact Services LLC, Tamarack, Dollar General Stores, The Resort at Glade Springs, WV Mine Power, Alpha Natural Resources/Kingston Resources, Cliffs/Pinnacle Mining, U.S. Army, West Virginia Department of Rehabilitation Services, The Greenbrier, Performance Bicycle, HMS Host, GMS Mine Repair & Maintenance, DishNetwork, HSC Industrial, Western Coal, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, PIA Jumpstart, Massey Energy, ICG Beckley, LLC, Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, VA Medical Center and West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

“Whether you are looking for a recent college graduate or an employee with years of experience, the job fair is a successful way to meet your company’s immediate employment needs,” Slone said.
