Daughter inspires business creating gourmet cakes, cupcakes and more

Sweet Nothings

— Instead of whispering “sweet nothings,” you can now sink your teeth into the gourmet cupcakes created at Sweet Nothings Inc. in Beckley.

Sweet Nothings co-owner Amanda Morgan’s passion for cakes and cupcakes began when her daughter was born, which inspired her to bake something special and unique for her child.

For the last four years, she’s been whipping up cakes and cupcakes for her family and taking orders from others while she taught school. Now, though, she and her fiancé Brian Lester have taken on creating sweet confections for the public on a full-time basis.

Before opening Sweet Nothings, Morgan was working as a fifth-grade teacher and also has taught some art classes. In order to gain more experience with cakes, though, she took cake decorating classes, Morgan explained. The classes just helped Morgan enhance her abilities, though, she said.

“I fell in love with it,” she said of cupcake and cake baking. “I had always wanted my own business.”

Morgan also has experience teaching art, which helps her make 3-D cakes. One of her “pride and joy” 3-D cakes was a barnyard cake she made for her children, she said.

Over the years of baking cakes and cupcakes on the side, Morgan received encouragement from friends and family, including Lester, who is her partner in the business. She credits him with giving her a lot of support and “confidence” to move ahead with opening Sweet Nothings.

Each day at Sweet Nothings, located at 423 Ragland Road, you can feed your sweet tooth with nine different cupcake flavors: white, chocolate, banana nut, chocolate raspberry, peanut butter and jelly, strawberry, caramel apple, red velvet or cookies and cream.

For December, Morgan says she’s working on and hopes to create eggnog and peach cobbler cupcakes. She’ll continue working to make other flavors of cupcakes in the future, she added.

Morgan says she hopes the pubic comes in to try her products, which include cheesecakes — Oreo, strawberry, raspberry and blueberry.

“You can’t get tired of it,” she said of the variety of flavors in her baked goods.

For cupcake orders of 12 or more, Morgan asks that customers give a one-day notice; for cake orders, she requests a three- to five-day notice.

Sweet Nothings and photos of cupcakes and cakes can be found on Facebook by searching Sweet Nothings, Inc. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and can be reached by calling 304-253-2253.
