A public hearing before the Raleigh County Planning and Zoning Commission will be held on Aug. 21 on the application of Beaver Coal Company for the purpose of rezoning a tract of real estate to establish a campground, RV Park and cabin rentals at the new Burning Rock Off-Road Park ATV trail system in Tams, near Sophia.
Burning Rock, which spans nearly 8,000 acres near Sophia, opened July 4 and offers about 100 miles of trails. Each trail is unique because the trails are designed for every skill level. There are 80 miles of trail for ATV riders and another 20 miles are for dirt bike riders.
The trail’s opening is the culmination of three years’ work for both the Raleigh County Commission and Beaver Coal Company. The county commission leases the property, located off Tams Mountain, from Beaver Coal. Beaver Coal operates a store and picnic shelter at the trailhead. Eventually, both entities would like to offer ATV and equipment rentals — offering everything a person would need to ride for the day — at the store.
The hearing is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. in the Raleigh County Commission Courtroom on Heber Street in Beckley.

New businesses coming to downtown
The new Rockhouse Java & Gelato coming soon to Neville Street in Uptown Beckley looks as if it’s going to be a great place to go for a cup of Joe. They have done a beautiful job remodeling the building. It is very impressive. They opened for the car show and will probably be opening in August, according to a source.
I would like to do a feature about all of the new businesses uptown, including Dakota Joe’s, which features a biker brunch on Saturdays. Also, Mamma Anne’s seems to be doing well seems to be doing well in her location and Dr. Julian Chipley’s plans for the Lost Parrot Beach Bar & Grill.
Look for those stories in a future edition.
