An opening date has not yet been set for the new Dollar General store under construction at 499 E. Main St. in Sophia, according to corporate officials.
“The store will open to the public when it’s ready,” said Emily Weiss, DG media relations manager. “After the store opens, then we will schedule a grand-opening event.”
Based in Goodlettsville, Tenn., Dollar General Corp.. is the nation’s largest small-box discount retailer, according to the corporate Web site.
Weiss said the opening of the new Dollar General outlet will not impact stores in operation at Lester Square and Coal City.
“There are no plans to close any stores,” said Weiss. “Convenience is a major factor in our store location decision.
“Our stores typically serve customers within a 3-mile radius, so we try to make our stores very convenient for shoppers.”
The new store is expected to permanently employ between six and 10 workers, said Weiss.
In fiscal year 2008, Dollar General garnered $10.5 billion in sales.
The corporation has 8,400 stores in 35 states and employs 72,000 people.
Dollar General offers a carefully-selected assortment of the most popular brand names in small, convenient locations at “everyday prices,” according to the Web site.
