They specialize in wedding receptions, school dances, parties and reunions, but Kelly and Mike Morris of Montgomery are ready to bring their disc jockey services to any function that requires great entertainment.
The husband and wife team, known as “The Entertainers,” have entertained thousands of people around the Upper Kanawha Valley and beyond for several years.
“I have enjoyed music since a very early age,” Mike said. “I used to sleep with an AM-FM radio beside my bed.”
Kelly also sings under the stage name “Adair.” Along with the live music, the couple also provides dance lights, a fog machine, a bubble machine and takes requests.
“We actually started because Kelly likes to sing,” Morris said. “We’d go around to karaoke parties, and she’d stand in line for two hours and get to sing one song. We figured we might as well buy some of our own equipment and go into business for ourselves.”
Morris is a full-time carpet installer, but spends all his free time as “DJ Mike.”
“When I’m out working and a new song comes on, someone always asks, ‘Who is that, DJ Mike?’” Morris said.
Morris says music has changed so much over the years.
“My wife and I grew up on what is now considered ‘classic rock,’” he said. “But we are still young at heart.”
With a music catalog dating back to the 1940s and an interactive and energetic approach to their services, The Entertainers have always received rave reviews.
“We were doing a wedding reception in Hamlin,” Morris recalled, “and we were booked to play for four hours. We played four hours, and the people were having a blast. The bride came up and asked if we could play for another hour, so we stayed for another hour. When that hour was just about up, her father came up and had us stay for another hour.”
That sort of customer satisfaction has translated into positive word-of-mouth endorsements and bookings, Morris said.
“If you do a good job, people call you back or refer others to you,” he said.
Morris says some DJs have gone computerized, but he prefers to remain “old school.”
“I like using CDs,” he said. “It’s a challenge to keep the music coming when the dance floor is full. We enjoy interacting with our crowds, dancing and joking. We add a little twist to the term DJ, but I don’t want to let too many secrets out. Let’s just say it like the old song said, ‘We’ll make it a night to remember.’”
The Entertainers’ under-construction Web site, www.affordabledjservices.net, notes that their references are available upon request.
