Pineville hostage situation resolved

By Mary Catherine Brooks

PINEVILLE — An attempted armed robbery quickly turned into a hostage stand-off Wednesday afternoon at Charlie’s Pharmacy, on Main Street, but the incident ended without injury.

The call came into the sheriff’s office between 2 and 2:30 p.m., Wyoming County Sheriff Randall Aliff said.

By the time deputies arrived moments later, the incident had escalated into a hostage situation, Aliff said.

One of the pharmacy technicians was held at gunpoint in a back room, according to officials.

Two hours later, the hostage ran from the pharmacy into the waiting arms of her family.

Drenched in sweat, Aliff said he would not identify the female perpetrator, or release additional details of the event, until Thursday morning.

Shortly after police arrived, Aliff said they began negotiations with the unidentified female and the State Police were also notified.

“We ‘Tazed’ her and brought her into custody,” Aliff said.

As Aliff and a State Police trooper escorted the suspect by the hostage, she apologized.

The investigation is continuing.
