Susman resigns Raleigh Board of Education seat

Raleigh County Board of Education member Sally Susman announced her resignation Tuesday in a letter that was to be e-mailed to BOE President Rick Snuffer, according to her son, Tom Susman.

In a copy of the letter given to The Register-Herald, Susman wrote, “I have been honored to serve on the Raleigh County Board of Education.

“However, as a result of health reasons, I am resigning from the Raleigh County Board of Education, effective July 1, 2014.

“The timing of my retirement will allow the newly-elected board members to participate in the selection of my replacement,” the letter reads, “I want to thank the voters for allowing me to serve them ...”

Snuffer said around 5 p.m. Tuesday that he had not yet received a copy of the letter but that he had been informed to expect it around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“Ms. Susman has spent her whole life in public service,” Snuffer added. “We really appreciate all she’s done throughout the years for families here in Raleigh County.”

Susman was elected to the board in May 2012, and her term was set to expire in 2016.

Snuffer said that a motion will be made at the  Tuesday BOE meeting for board members to discuss the resignation and to ask for letters of interest from those who want to begin serving the unexpired two years of Susman’s term starting July 1.

At the regular BOE meeting June 24, he said, BOE members will have it on the agenda and will look at the applications and select Susman’s replacement.

Susman was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
