The annual Rocket Boys/October Sky Festival, traditionally held on the first weekend of October each year in Coalwood, is relocating in 2012 to Beckley, after reluctantly being canceled earlier this year by the all-volunteer group who had presented the event in the past due to a lack of local able-bodied volunteers. -
Bluegrass legend Everett Lilly dies
Bluegrass legend and Raleigh County native Everett Lilly, who with his brother Bea, reached the heights of bluegrass fame, died at his home in Clear Creek Tuesday afternoon, according to his son, Everett. He was 87.

Brown chosen as Raleigh County Schools superintendent
The Raleigh County School Board voted unanimously Wednesday morning to offer James “Jim” Brown, currently McDowell County Superintendent, a position as Superintendent of Raleigh County Schools.
Board President Richard Snuffer said he hopes negotiations will be complete next week and to have Brown sign a contract by June 1 to begin work on July 1. -
Murder suspect captured along Mercer, Raleigh county line
After a two-day manhunt, murder suspect Tracey Atwell was captured while traveling along W.Va. 5 near the intersection of Nubbins Ridge Road and Egeria Road along the Mercer and Raleigh county line around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, said Sgt. M.D. Clemons with the Crimes Against Children Unit of the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment.
