Mountain State University Academy coach Rob Fulford’s Christmas got a little better Friday, when Gilbert second-team all-stater Josh Birchfirld enrolled in the school.
The 6-foot-8, 260-pound senior went through his first practice Wednesday and will play for the Falcons today when they face Charleston Catholic at 3 p.m. in Charleston.
“From what I understand, he enrolled on Friday,” Fulford said. “I understand that he was either going to Logan or he was coming here.”
Fulford said Birchfield’s presence is definitely welcomed.
“I think what we’re missing, he is definitely a key piece, somebody who likes to bang and rebound,” Fulford said. “We have a 6-11 and a 6-9 player but they are mostly perimeter players. (Birchfield) can definitely clog up the middle.
A rumor that Poca sophomore sensation Noah Cottrill has transfered to MSU is not true.
“I think I would have known that,” said Fulford, noting that his Christmas wasn’t quite that good.
Cottrill has already verbally committed to West Virginia.
