Visions series to wrap up

Mountain State University’s acclaimed Appalachian Visions series wraps up its spring 2009 season with a trio of programs that includes something for everyone, ranging from literature to social issues to a celebration of traditional music and arts.

A launch party and reading with open mic will be held tonight in honor of the new edition of Mountain Whispers, MSU’s literary magazine. MSU writers, students as well as faculty and staff members, will read a variety of works, with time allotted to anyone who wishes to bring a short reading. The reading will begin at 7 p.m. in Margaret A. Carter Auditorium, Carter Hall, on South Kanawha Street.

Thursday, the focus will turn to issues of poverty and the Appalachian stereotypes associated with poverty with a screening of Diane Sawyer’s controversial ABC News program “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains.”

Saturday, the Appalachian Visions Annual Festival and Concert brings to MSU some of the area’s best traditional music and arts in an informal, family-friendly setting at the John W. Eye Conference Center.
