Borck signs three for MSU women’s soccer team

By Dan Stillwell
Register-Herald Sports Writer

Recruiting is coming along slowly, but surely, for the Mountain State University women’s soccer team.

Coach Kelly Borck has signed three players for the Cougars, who will field a team for the first time next fall.

The recruits include South Charleston standout Paige Butcher and Ohio defender/midfielders Lindsey Denny and Jessica Hupp.

Butcher was an aggressive outside midfielder and forward for the Black Eagles and earned honorable mention all-state honors.

“Paige’s speed and tenacity, both offensively and defensively, will allow her to be a big contributor for this new program,” Borck said.

Butcher, who also played basketball and softball at South Charleston, will pursue a degree in diagnostic medical sonography.

Denny, from Watkins Memorial High School in Pataskala, Ohio, is a quick, skilled player with great field vision.

“Her ball control and ability to see the field so well will be a huge asset for us,” Borck said.

Denny, a second-team All-OCC player, will study nursing.

Hupp, another Watkins Memorial High School product, participated in volleyball, basketball and track as well as soccer.

“I look for Jessica to bring some personality to the team,” Borck said. “She’ll be a strong motivator, encouraging others to work as hard as her.”

Hupp, like Butcher, will work for a degree in diagnostic medical sonography.

Borck hopes to make several other signings, including some international players.

“I’m talking to three from Ireland,” she said.

The Cougars will begin practice in two weeks with current Mountain State students who are interested in playing soccer.
