Juveniles incite riot at Buchanan facility

GRUNDY, Va. — A riot at a juvenile facility in Buchanan County ended peacefully early Tuesday, police said.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the Virginia Wilderness Institute in the Patterson community around 10 p.m. Monday night in reference to a riot and attempted escape involving five juveniles, Sheriff Ray Foster said.

“There was five juveniles and one adult,” Foster said. “They started a riot, and vandalizing the room.”

Foster said the six individuals attempted to escape from the facility.

“They didn’t escape,” Foster said. “They just attempted to escape.”

Foster said law enforcement officials cleared the facility around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

“We had several deputies, and the state (police),” Foster said. “We just assisted the Wilderness Institute.”

Foster said no charges were filed by the sheriff’s department.

Foster said the Virginia Wilderness Institute is handling the investigation.
