Bridal, Prom and Special Occasions Fair set for today

Doors open at noon for event being held at Tamarack

BECKLEY — Doors open at noon today at the Tamarack Conference Center for the 11th annual Bridal, Prom and Special Occasions Fair. Sponsors are The Register-Herald, Belk, Flowers by Nancy, Harvey’s Fashions and Bridals and the Tamarack Conference Center.

There is no admission for the show.

A number of vendors have booths set up and will offer tips and ideas for planning a wedding, reception or special occasion.

“I like being at the Bridal Fair because it is a microcosm of the attendees,” said Mac Tieche, president of Black Knight Country Club in Beckley. “They are all there looking at all the various possibilities and are very hopeful about their wedding day, but it’s also about their life. They are starting a new life, and they are looking at all the possibilities and all the hope. It’s neat to be there. Everybody has a positive attitude, and we like being there to be a part of it.”

Terry Quentrill of Hurricane, a newcomer to the Bridal Fair this year, will show off some of the work she does as owner of Calligraphy by Terry. “Most people think of calligraphy as black on white. I do something much different,” Quentrill said. “I think people will be surprised to see some of the things I have to offer.”

Quentrill is also a mixed media artist and combines her calligraphy skills with some unusual wedding items and applies her talents to place cards, table numbers menus and wedding gifts.

“I’ve been lettering since I was 20, so I have 30 years of experience, and I used to do this as a sideline. Now, I’m trying to get my name and my work out there so I can do this full time,” she said.

Sharing her booth will be Belle Manjong, owner of B. Belle Events of Charleston. “I’m really looking forward to being part of this bridal fair,” she said. “I’m an events planner, and I can help brides create  the decor, atmosphere and mood they want to set for the occasion. It’s fun to meet people and work with them while they are in the process.”

Fashion shows provided by Harvey’s Fashions and Bridals will be held at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. in the Hulett C. Smith Theater.

One of the highlights of the show will be the Bridal Survivor competition at 3:30 p.m., where brides will vie for prizes by answering bridal trivia questions. The game-show format is provided by Jukebox Entertainment of Beckley.

A drawing will be held around 4 p.m. for the grand prize, a bedroom suite valued at nearly $1,000 from John Eye’s Big Sandy Superstore in Beckley.
