Lt. Ernie Parsons, assistant Beckley fire marshal, assembles a smoke detector. Firefighters say that even though smoke detectors are required by law, they seem to be seldom used or maintained. When the Beckley Fire Department responded to structure fires in 2006, firefighters found working smoke detectors in only 22 percent of the homes.
