BECKLEY — The federal Mine Safety and Health Admnitsration has confirmed that a coal miner was killed Thursday evening in an accident at Pocahontas Coal Company's Affinity Mine near Sophia. The West Virginia Office of Mine Safety, Health and Training has identified the deceased miner as Edward L. Finney, 43, of Bluefield, Va.

MSHA spokesperson Amy Louviere said a preliminary report indicates that at approximately 9:20 p.m. Thursday, Finney was crushed to death while pushing a scoop bucket onto a hoist that moved unexpectedly, and reportedly picked up the scoop bucket trapping the victim underneath.

District 4 personnel from MSHA responded to the scene and have started an accident investigation, Louviere added.
