Workers perform road maintenance on Robert C. Byrd Drive near the Neville Street intersection Thursday. Dale Hughart, Raleigh County supervisor for the state Division of Highways, said the repaving work in the northbound and southbound lanes is also designed to improve drainage, replace pipes and replace sidewalks. Work from Songer Insurance to the South Oakwood Avenue intersection will mainly be performed at night because of traffic congestion concerns. One lane on each side will remain closed. The project, estimated to cost $380,000, is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Hughart said more similar projects should “pop up” soon because more stimulus funding is being released. Similar work will be done on Byrd Drive near Crossroads Mall.
